i have a 1981 yamaha xs650. does anyone know if there is away to change the electronic timing to the standard pre 79 contact point ignition?

I also was wondering why you'd remove CDI for points. My first bike (TX500A) had points. They were never a 'problem' but my retrogrouch tendencies only go so far.

I want to swap them out because my tci box isn't working and I was currious how hard it would be to change over abd get running until I have more money to spend on a new tci box

Out of my 650 experiences here... but aren't the TCI models less the ATU?

Yes the TCI did not use the mechanical advancer unit as the points did. The advancer was in the TCI box. It used the time difference between the two pickup coils to tell the rpm and used that to tell when to advance the ignition.

I would change over but not to points. A different electronic ignition like Pamco or Boyer will work. TC

Collecting all the parts from Ebay or other members on here or other sites can be done. It might be easier and cheaper to just get all new parts from Mike's. It's up to you.

I have some point plates and stuff laying around... off hand I don't think i have an ATU though...
