1980 xs650 with no spark. i tested the coil and they seem to be good. the cdi box was replaced about 3 years ago. last time the bike ran was november 2009. wouldnt start up in the spring, and I am now trying to figure out why. so.. I have been doing tons of research, and see that this is a familiar problem. here are some of my questions.
is there a way to convert my ignition system so it will not have a CDI box?
I checked the coils, and they seem good. my multimeter is kinda crappy, i will test them again though.
how does the regulator effect ignition? how do you test them? condensors?
this post is all over the place, for that i apologize. ok its late, and ive been at this all day.

I have an 1981 xs650 with ign.black box, was running good & then would not start. I had just bought this bike, the wiring was in pretty sad shape, had been pieced together. I'm in the process of rewiring ( my 1st time at this). I'm cutting everything in the clear & starting from scratch.I would like to keep the factory ignition, but have not been able to find after market replacements for the ign.box. Used ones on eBay are outrageous, $220-$650. I don't have what it takes to do that to another brother. Supply & demand !! If I get any useful info I will let you know. Good luck. Sears

ricthefix, who is on the yam650 list, repairs ignition boxes for a hobby.
Pull the box apart and replace the power transistor. Resolder all the board to eliminate any cold solder joint that fails due to vibration and age.
A non working ignition could be as simple as a broken wire or connector or a damaged switch. Run a jumper from the positive battery to the positive wire on the coil. Run a jumper from the negative battery terminal to the frame or to a ground on the box to establish a good ground. This direct route will eliminate all teh wiring.

Got your PM, sears. There are no aftermarket replacements for either the igniter box or pickup coil--and that's a shame, since crank-triggered ignition is more stable than cam-triggered. Since the problem cropped up after winter storage you're doing the right thing to go through the connectors as the most likely source of trouble. Get a decent meter and start trouble-shooting by checking your battery voltage, then see if coil voltage is within 1/2 volt of that. If the drop is more, work back down the harness; kill switch and/or key switch may need cleaning. You might also open the box and see if the wires are still attached to the circuit board. If you find a break, it can be resoldered. If none of that gives you fire, you have the option of retrofitting the OEM breaker point system or fitting an aftermarket ignition, e.g. Pamco, Boyer-Bransden, or Probe.

Another simultaneous post there, Tom! Yep, temporarily bypassing the harness is good way to go about trouble shooting. Sears, if connectors/switches turn out to be the issue, you can do a permanent bypass and power the ignition straight from the battery through a 30A 4- point relay. Go to www.wiredgeorge.com for details.

Thanks for the info. I opened the ign.box up , wires attached did not see anything burnt.I checked ign. coil with ohm meter, 2.76 ohms on primary side, I believe that is a good reading. My Clymer Man. got here yesterday and I down loaded more info off the web. Seems like there is just not enough time in the day. I'm in Middleburg, FL so I would not no a thing about winter storage. Hope that didn't sound like a smartass to you guys in the cold country. This is a bare bones bob/chop so no extras to worry with. I took a chance & got a Ing.box off eBay, should be here sometime this week. Buckinbobber, I don't believe there is such a thing as a stupid question, no one knows everything, it's great to be able to talk to guys that have a lot more knowledge than I have.I used a knife & flat blade screwdriver to get mine opened.

On ebay you can find used TCI boxes from around $50 and up. Once in awhile you find NOS boxes, they are the ones that run around $500. If you can't fix the box, there are several ignitions out there. The Boyer brandson is popular. I had a Martek once, still pop up now and then, Dyna pops up to. I like the Pamco, easy install, exellent support. You can even build one from junk yard parts. Do some research, shop around.
