Can someone tell me how to seal the tach cable fitting at the right side cover? There's nothing in my manual about it. I tried fitting a rubber o-ring which helped, but it still leaks... Thanks

There is a specific o-ring on the shaft inside the case. Your manual should show it clearly.

Besides the o-ring (#2), there is a really small oil seal (#3) in the sleeve ..... Replace both of those and you can usually stop the leaks. If you're going to attempt this without removing the side cover, don't withdraw the tach drive rod. That shim washer on the bottom (#8) can fall off and then the rod will have too much up and down play.

I could not find a thread that talks about the simple matter of tach cable removal.
I unscrewed the cable housing at the side cover and was ready to tug the cable out of the engine, but I remembered a warning about dislodging that shim washer.
I don't want to take off the side cover. Can I just pull out the cable, or does bolt #5 keep it retained inside the engine. What are the recommended steps to get the cable out without disturbing gear #7 and shim #8?

Just unscrew the threaded cap, and the cable will come right out. Leave bolt #5 in place and all is well. The loss of the shim washer can occur if you remove bolt #5, and remove the sleeve, which then allows the shaft to be pulled upward.
If you want to remove the sleeve, you would want to push downward on the shaft (with a screwdriver), while removing the sleeve.

Good explanation, remember I had the same problem and couldn't figure what the H... was wrong as I didn't know about that small oil seal. I didn'te even know part 1 and 4 were separate pieces! But when I figured it out, it was most satisfying to replace that seal and get rid of that leak! simple pleasures...

I've got oil coming out of the tach cable all over my pipes, engine, boot, etc. I too the assembly apart and didn't find any sign of the o-ring #2, and the surfaces the o-ring would sit on are pretty rough. Does anyone know the size of the o-ring? Is it something I could find at the hardware store? Mike's is out of stock. I don't know what I can do about smoothing the surfaces any, especially the bottom surface.

Well, I happen to have a new unused one on hand and as far as I can see, it measures 1mm thick x 12mm I.D. and 14mm O.D. It's red in color so I don't know if that means it's some sort of special rubber or something.

Sears Hardware has been my go-to place for O-rings. It's next to the grocery store and very convienient. The last O-ring I bought was for the cam chain adjuster cap on my SR500 that I cut in half. :^( I happened to be at a Yamaha dealer first and they had it in stock! Yamaha wanted $4+ which is why I paid 30 cents for one just like it at the hardware store.
